What does it mean to be a Five-star Teacher?

Atlantic’s mission is to help every student in Vietnam learn to work, study, play and communicate in English, creating life-changing opportunities whatever their interests and career. Atlantic’s teachers are critical in supporting students and helping us to achieve this mission.
Therefore, we encourage our teachers to enact and strive for the the following Teacher Behaviours.

A Five-star Teacher manages the classroom
environment

• Sets up classroom routines and activities to facilitate learning
• Plans for and manage interaction to include all learners and promote participation
• Manages time effectively to ensure lesson aims are met
• Sets up classroom tasks with clear instructions and modelling
• Manages student behaviour and participation and deal with student problems appropriately

A Five-star Teacher plans and delivers effective lessons, following the set curriculum

• Follows the Atlantic curriculum to ensure that course aims are met
• Sets suitable aims for lessons and individual lesson stages
• Adapts coursebook materials to engage students meaningfully with the language
• Anticipates potential problems for their lessons and plan solutions
• Employs differentiation strategies to challenge stronger learners and support lower level learners

A Five-star Teacher understands and knows their students

• Builds good rapport with and among learners
• Promotes a positive learning environment
• Shows respect for learners and involve them in lessons
• Tracks student progress and communicate any issues to managers
• Engages learners and motivate them to learn
• Helps students identify their goals and support students to achieve them

A Five-star Teacher has the necessary teaching knowledge and skills

• Understands language and how it is learned
• Understands Cambridge Exams and how to prepare students for them
• Conducts assessments and grade students in line with standardised guides (eg,
• Cambridge English Exam handbooks and rubrics)
• Identifies learner strengths and areas for improvement and plan accordingly
• Uses appropriate methods to provide feedback that helps learners correct and upgrade their language

A Five-star Teacher acts professionally

• Represents Atlantic positively and professionally in front of schools, students, and parents
• Dresses appropriately following company dress code and cultural expectations
• Respects the cultures of Vietnam and their colleagues and are open to other points of view
• Completes administrative tasks on time and to the required standard
• Works flexibly within a team to help achieve the goals of the programme
• Follows safeguarding policies to ensure the wellbeing of all learners and staff

A Five-star Teacher communicates effectively

• Maintains contact with staff including academic management, operations, scheduler as required
• Checks and respond to emails phone calls during working hours as required
• Reports issues through appropriate channels
• Is proactive in anticipating issues that may affect their delivery of the programme, and seek support in advance

A Five-star Teacher wants to develop

• Looks for opportunities to improve their teaching and other professional skills
• Is open to feedback and takes action
• Reflects on their teaching and identify areas for improvement
• Asks for help when they face difficulty
